Purpose: The purpose of this piece was to enlighten young readers about the real intentions of celebrity articles. Many articles about celebrities use irrelevant yet attractive facts about these stars to sell otherwise uninteresting stories or events.
The debate over how Madonna fell off a horse is insignificant, the true intention is to draw attention. The matter at hand has no intellectual value or meaningful content whatsoever, yet this event has become breaking news. Why? Because the celebrity appeal of Madonna draws the curiosity of fans and all others interested in the lives of stars.
The story itself is simply a he said she said tennis match. Everyone involved has their own depiction of Madonnas accident. One side suggests that Madonna's horse was startled by "Paparazzi who jumped out of the bushes", while Thomas Hinton, a photographer, suggests that their was only one photographer in the area, before and after the accident, not during.
So with two differing arguments and no significant evidence or logical reasoning, what value does Madonna's accident truly hold? The only facts that are provided by the article relate to a previous fall in 2005, her appearance on David Letterman afterwards, and her divorce with Guy Ritchie. The use of these historical Madonna events only make it more evident that no information could be found about her recent accident, the one that the article is actually about.
It's obvious to see that this article was not written to inform readers about Madonna's fall. The article's content and information resemble High School gossip as opposed to breaking news and that was the true intention all along. The gossip factor and celebrity appeal were the true selling points of this article. For readers, this Madonna accident holds zero influence on value on their lives.

I believe what you wrote. Some people are just so wrapped up in celebrity lives that it makes people feel ashamed. I mean, so what if she fell of the horse, random people fall down and the do not care about it. You wrote that;” The story itself is simply a he said she said tennis match.” I agree with this statement, everyone always has their own opinion about what happens with a celebrity.
ReplyDeleteIntriguing piece James, keep up the work!
I agree! That random gibberish about Madonna's past about riding horses and getting a divorce had nothing to do with the origonal topic. Your response was very clever, because a lot of this junk like you said is irrelevent yet attracts all these people to read it.
