The Silver Hairs of Wisdom

Audience: 16-26

Purpose: The purpose of this piece is to enlighten young adults about their irresponsible actions as students in today's society. The Silver Hairs of Wisdom is a window into the life of a teacher worn out by the mischievous behaviour of students.

Struggling with the intricacies of the school computer, Lawrence soon became aware of how advanced the world has become. Lawrence is a supply teacher, working in the library at lunch. At first glance, it was as though Lawrence was a broken down old man, ravaged by the hardships of life.

Slouched over in front of the monitor, Lawrence revealed fluffy grey hair that would have made Einstein proud. Standing out from the hairs, Lawrence also possessed a growing bald spot. Based on appearance alone, Lawrence was about 65 years old. His dull grey knit sweater, beige pants, beige coat, and slouching posture all revealed an exhaustion about him. He appeared as though he could take no more, and simply did not care.

Little do people know, Lawrence is a highly respected teacher with over 35 years of teaching experience. He has spent time teaching in high schools and universities all over the world, ranging from schools in London, Ontario to London, England. Philosophy, literature, and social sciences are the areas of expertise for Lawrence. Not only does he possess unheralded knowledge of these subjects, Lawrence has also been known to teach with a charisma that inspires his students. Recently however, Lawrence has begun to slow down. In the past decade, Lawrence has noticed an increased disinterest among students. He has also noticed a growing disrespect towards teachers that students are not even aware of. Students have been throwing objects in class, swearing, texting and gossiping during his lessons. Lawrence has been more fatigued in the past decade then any other time in his career. In the last 3 years, Lawrence has retired from full-time teaching and now supplies from time to time.

Lately, he has been supplying in Toronto secondary schools. Teaching is is life, regardless of the reckless behaviour of students. Family and friends of Lawrence have noticed his exhaustion though, and have recommended that he retire. At each recommendation, Lawrence replies by stating "kids deserve to be educated"
